What distinguishes soundSCAPE from other summer festivals for composers and performers?
soundSCAPE is not your typical new music festival. Far more than just another line on your resume, soundSCAPE provides participants a chance to experience music-making as a professional:
"...this experience has shown me the potential that I can have as a composer. If the
purpose of this festival was to inspire young composers and performers in their artistic
growth, you have truly succeeded. I know much better now the artistic goal at which
I need to work towards, and have been incredibly inspired to do it." ~ Michael, 2010
Many festivals emphasize networking and career development, but how can I be sure that I'm getting the tools I need to succeed?
Not only have our faculty achieved distinction as performers and composers, they stand apart as artists committed to providing participants with opportunities for developing an entrepreneurial and proactive approach in establishing careers... during and after the festival. Following are a sample of recent initiatives undertaken by soundSCAPE Alums:
International Composers Collective
Created by Sam Cave (guitar, '10), Calogero Panvino (composer, '10), and
Timothy Mauthe (composer, '09 & '10), this organization seeks to promote,
disseminate, and create new music and performances around the world,
encouraging total collaboration between composers and performers of new music.
Diagenesis
A unique duo formed by Heather Barnes (soprano, '10) and Jennifer Bewerse (cello, '10),
inspired by their collaboration at soundSCAPE. The mission of Diagenesis is to facilitate
the process of musical change during its conversion from imagined art into live
performance. The duo has since commissioned a new repertoire, and has toured both the
eastern and western seaboards of the United States.
The Quangle Ensemble
Irish composer Matthew Whiteside ('10) formed this organization to attract
musicians from across Ireland to produce professional concerts throughout the
island. The ensemble features 15 resident composers and performers working
together for a seamless integration of musical thought in performance.
Penbridge Trio
Inspired by their experience meeting and playing together at soundSCAPE in '09,
alums Andrew Booth (guitar), Bryan Kelly (piano), and Martha Morrison (violin)
formed this unique trio. Following a successful internet fund raising campaign, the
group commissioned several composers for new works, and set out on a
concert tour of the United Kingdom.
This forum is a new initiative by soundSCAPE to highlight performances and events involving former participants, guest artists, and faculty of our festival. We also hope it will serve to keep us all in touch, and as a tool to create new networks amongst ALL alums.
Cellist Jennifer Bewerse and soprano Heather Barnes have formed Diagenesis, a duo dedicated to facilitating composer/ performer collaboration. Help fund their spring tour! |
